MACOR®
Glass-ceramic that can be machined with precision for complex components
MACOR® combines the technical properties of glass-ceramic with exceptionally good machinability. The material can be sawed, turned, milled, drilled, ground, and polished using suitable tools. This makes it possible to manufacture even demanding precision components with holes, threads, and complex contours.
The material is non-porous, does not outgas, and possesses good thermal and electrical insulation properties. This makes MACOR® particularly suitable for components in electronics, vacuum technology, laser and laboratory technology, as well as in other technically demanding applications.
Schröder Spezialglas manufactures custom precision and specialty components from MACOR®. In addition, various semi-finished products are available for testing, prototyping, and further processing.
MACOR® is a white, machinable glass-ceramic. Its microstructure consists of approximately 55 percent fluorophlogopite mica and 45 percent borosilicate glass. The embedded mica crystals enable controlled machining, while the glass matrix contributes to the material’s thermal, electrical, and physical properties.
A key advantage lies in the direct machining of the raw material. Unlike many ceramic manufacturing processes, no additional firing or sintering process is required after machining. This allows for relatively flexible adjustments to geometries—an advantage for prototypes, individual parts, and small production runs.
MACOR® remains dimensionally stable during continuous operation up to 800 °C and exhibits low thermal conductivity. At the same time, the material acts as an electrical insulator, even at elevated temperatures. Its pore-free and non-outgassing structure also makes it suitable for vacuum and high-vacuum applications.
The tolerances and surface finishes that can actually be achieved depend on the component geometry, dimensions, and the selected machining process. Schröder Spezialglas therefore evaluates these requirements on a project-by-project basis and provides support for implementation tailored to the manufacturing process.
